Hot October

It’s the first of October and its roasting hot! Is has been 26 degrees C. We spent the day at Wakehurst with Ben, Adam and Jo. Mia has been saying more words. Glasses, tissue, please and conker. A new one is shoulder while pointing at my head.

Talking of conkers, Jake has been sorting his ‘big bag O conkers’. I came into the kitchen to find them laid out on the kitchen table in small, medium and large piles. Mia continues to be extremely cute at the moment. She comes over for big cuddles and wraps her arms around your neck. She is enjoying her time with Sara, her child minder. After drop off I shoulder her to Sara’s house but she usually prefers to walk. She is quite a quick little walker and is often faster than Jake! At Wakehurst she walked almost everywhere and even when she tripped and cut her knee, her enthusiasm was walking did not abate.

All change

It’s windy. It’s rainy. It’s all change. Amy officially has started her Social Workers masters degree. Well I say officially started, she has gone off for the introductory day before the course starts proper. I was tasked with taking Jake to school. Of course little Mia came along too for the ride which she loves to do.

When I arrived at the school, Mrs Hughes was waiting to usher the children in, because of the rain. Mia usually has a wander around the playground but this time had to make do with sitting in her pram within the safe confines of her rain cover :-).

Next stop, was at Sara’s, Mia’s lovely child minder. Mia has taken to this very well. I think the home setup of a child minder has helped immensely. Amy officially is scheduled to finish at 4.30pm today but may come home earlier. Depending what happens I may have to take half a day off.

When Amy starts her course full-time we have put in place a rather hectic schedule and due to cost constraints are relying heavily on friends to pick Jake up after school on the days when I am in the office. Lets hope this works out. Fingers crossed!!

Mad few weeks

The Wollny household has been in turmoil. First of all I came down with a mystery(to this day) illness which caused intense abdominal pain. Thiswent on for a couple of days and horrible sleepless nights until I took myself off to A&E to be checked out. They did lots of tests, namely urine, blood and ECG. They felt around and prodded a bit but were at a loss as to the cause.

The next day of went to see Dr Benard at Hilly Fields clinic. He gave a thorough examination and prescribed some rather excellent pain killers which left me feeling rather spacey or more importantly in no pain. I had the week off work while I rested. I weened myself off the Tramadol and happily the pain had gone. I have an ultrasound later in the month at the hospital though so maybe they experts will find the cause.

Last week Mia and Jake were at Granny’s while Amy got on with her marking work. We had a call on Monday to say that Mia was in A&E having stitched. She had fallen on their clasted glass coffee table, gashed her head and subsequently needed three stitches in the her bonce. Poor Lady M! Today Amy and Sally are taking her to have her stitches taken out.

I have now lost count of Mia’s teeth. Last week she had three pop through I think! Her baby signing is also very cute. When she is cold/or wet she puts her arms around her and wiggles from side to side. When she has a pain she points to the area with her finger.

Jake has started school and after a wobbly start he is fine. I say fine, but we are all full of colds at the moment. He has a rather fruity hacking cough.

Mia Development

Various observations of toddler Mia.

Mia said “Goodbye Daddy” for the first time today!
Other words include “cheers” or “chz”, “upsy daisy”, “dooown” when she wants to get down.

She was been doing her signing for “more” which can mean more or that she generally wants something. She has been getting very frustrated because she understands a good deal but cannot communicate what she wants, so she usually ends up squealing or bucking on the floor.

Her walking is fantastic now. Once she stood up there was no stopping her!

She has got quite attached to her taggie which could be because when Tricia was babysitting she forgot to put it in her cot 🙁

Last night Mia woke with suspected sore gums. I plucked her up and put her in pur bed. She lay resting in the middle of us and was asleep in no time. Pet lamb!

She like things done her way. She is very particular with her morning milk routine. Milk, bib, cushion to rest on in the correct place on the sofa, blanket. Sorted!

Meltdown

Amy has been hard at work the last couple of weekends marking coursework for Tribal. I have been getting th children out of the house to give her some peace and quiet! On Saturday we went to Greenwich Park. He had picnic lunch at the foot of Jake’s hill and then proceed up the hill. Mia did very well, striding up purposefully.

At the top Mia was tired so I popped her in the pram and she was soon asleep. Jake and I proceeded to the Pavillion Gardens for an ice cream and a sit-down. We bought two mint choc chip ice creams(minus the flakes boo!) and sat down in a shady area. Within a few minutes Jake had made a friend also called Jake and they were chargin in and out of the ‘Weeping Angel’ forest. Mia slept peacefully on until…she was woken by Jake and/or Jake when they came to investigate the pram(I think Jake wanted to proudly show the other Jake his sister ).

Anyway Mia WAS WOKEN. This is something that you SHOULD NOT DO. She looked a little bemused then started to cry. In a very short period of time she was in full meltdown mode. I carried her, she cried, put her down, she cried, In fact all my efforts to calm her down were in vain. She ws writhing and bucking so much that in the end I had to put her in the pram and leave. After a few minutes walking with her wailing in the pram she kind of calmed down. Enough for her to come out for a play on the grass in Blackheath :-).

Mia and Jake

Mia’s cuteness knows no bounds. She has developed a great toddling, gamboling run. She is saying several words, “upsy daisy”, “dalek”, “hello”. She has a very cute milk routine. She takes her milk and bib, walks into the lounge. She then settles herself onto the sofa with her fluffly pillow and drinks her milk. Lo behold if you pick her up or move her while drinking. She may get a little cross ;-).

She woke last night at around 3pm. For several months she has been sleeping through the night so it was alittle strange. I went into her room and she sat up . I brought her into our bed and she quiely settled down. 10 minutes later she was still awake so I took her back into her cot and she soundlessly cuddled into her taggie while I put her blanket on her and then went to sleep! Bonus. She is such a good girl.

Jake has recovered really well from his surgery. His hearing is excellent and he is much more communicative. He no longer has a perpetual cold and running nose. So all in all, although it was a big thing for Jake to go through, it was worth it in the end. Today Jake and Mia have gone to Baby Beas birthday in Greenwich Park. I am sad I cannot join in 🙁

Riots

BBC news story

I don’t know what’s going on. In London in particular and elsewhere in the UK there have been on-going riots. These were sparked by the death of a young man in Tottenham. It is evident though that the looting seen yesterday is simply opportunistic and copycat. Last night some shops were looted and cars set ablaze in Lewisham which is just down the hill.

This was a little too close to home. Before going to bed I double locked all doors and hoped it wouldn’t kick off. Luckily the night passed peacefully. This may have something to do with the fact that Lewisham is home to the largest police station in Europe :-).

Jake in hospital

Lewisham Hospital

Last Friday, the 9th July to be precise Jake went to Lewisham hospital to have his grommets and adenoids taken out. We arrived at 7.30am. There were already some other parents there with their little ones. It soon became obvious that Jake was the eldest one there. There other children ranged from two to three years old.

The policy at the Children’s Ward is that the youngest children go in first. Consequently we had to wait until midday before it was Jakes turn. This was a little worrying because the children were crying and getting upset when they were having their ‘magic cream’ put on. One little girl came back from surgery in floods of tears and one little boy went into meltdown while having the ‘magic drinking straw’ put in. Jake was a trooper however and tried not to let this faze him.

We spent the time playing Lego Star Wars on the PS2 and watching ‘Stoppit and Tidyup’. When we got the call, Jake changed into his gown and lay on the bed. It was very upsetting seeing his little frame lying there. A porter came and we proceeded to the second floor where we were taken to the room where Jake was given his General Anaesthetic. He was very brave and calm. When the white anaesthesia fluid was being injected he was obviously in discomfort so it was a blessed relief to see him quickly go under within a few seconds.

After we gave him a kiss, we went to grab a bite to eat at the cafe. As we were finishing the nurse came in and said the surgeon needed a word. She said not to worry there was nothing wrong. We quickly were ushered back to the surgical ward. The surgeon appeared dressed in her scrubs. She explained that Jake’s tonsils were enlarged and infected and needed to come out. The adenoids were in her opinion fine. We agreed to this as we both knew his tonsils were huge.

I had to go home to collect lady M so waited eagerly by the phone for the call to say he had come out of surgery. Amy phoned at around 1pm. Jake was fine but sleeping and everything was a success. What a relief!

It has now been five days since his operation. Jake’s voice has raised in pitch which was very strange to being with but we are getting used to it now. He has been prescribed pain killers and antibiotics which have been working fine. A few times he has woken early in the morning with terrible earache but this is to be expected according to our post operative information sheet. The recovery is expected to take two weeks so really it is early days yet. Well done Jake you are a star and we love you very much. So proud of my little boy :-).

She Walks!

Mia standing proud

Mia walks just four days shy of her 18 month landmark age and Mia has decided to walk. Amy tells me that this morning she was pointing to her shoes and wanted to put them on. Amy duly obliged and helped her into her new white cruising shoes.

She then pulled herself up and hey presto! she was tentatively toddling across the lounge! She was very proud of herself and rightly so! Well done Mia :-).

I’m not sure what the catalyst for this momentous event was. Last weekend I took her to Hilly Fields and she held my hand and walked pretty much the whole way there and back. This may have helped. Of course she may have just decided that she wanted to walk or felt ‘ready’ to move up to the next level of toddlerdom. Whatever the reason the whole Wollny family are very proud and pleased of little Mia(and to be honest and little relieved!).

9th Tooth

I notice another peg today in her lower right hand jaw near the back. You kept that quiet Mia. This new tooth hasn’t really bothered her too much. There have been some truly awful smelly pooey nappies but not the short temper to go with it!

Lately she has been saying ‘hello’, and ‘down’ and ‘baa'(for bird) as well as the usual ‘asnana’ which we think means ‘there’! She has also been known to say ‘cuddle’. V cute :-).
