Loft

The guys have started on the loft.

Last Friday we had the scaffolding up. Well not all the scaffolding, they ‘forgot’ the shorter poles for the side of the house. Today I woke to the sound of the builders chatting outside over mugs of tea. They were hoping that the scaffolding would arrive so that they could crack on with the metal-work. Said metal-work is currently languishing in the front of the house.

When I arrived home after a sweaty cycle ride from Waterloo I saw that a delivery of wood had also arrived and had been propped up against the scaffolding at the front of the house.

The site manager said it would be a week to get the floor put in so we came go up there and gauge the size of the rooms. How exciting!

First day back

The first ‘official’ day back at work. I am hoping that our luck will turn for the better this year. It really did end on a horrible note.

It was dark when I left the house, it was also cold and a fresh dusting of snow had fallen during the night. Did I cycle? Did I hell. Although after the hellish sardine-like commute to Waterloo East, cycling in sub-zero temperatures on an icy road now seems infinitely preferable.

I put up my surround sound speakers a few days ago. They look a little odd sitting just behind the sofa at head level. Apparently that is how they should be though. Now I need to fix the front speakers and place the centre speaker in the telly. The sound is pretty good with a nice bass response and spatial quality.

I just hope that the boys don’t try to pull the speakers from the wall.

Oh noro!

Jake woke in the night crying. We went into his bedroom to see what was wrong and the poor lamb was sitting on his bed with a pile of sick next to him. I picked him up and he continued to be sick a couple of times. He kept saying “I’m poorly” and “I don’t like it when I’m sick”. 🙁 Poor angel. He went back to sleep in his bed after reading “Thomas And The Tiger” as a special treat.

Unfortunately he woke again just after 6am with another small vomit. I plucked him up and he settled in our bed watching cbeebies.

In the morning when he wakes early he always asks “Is it sunny yet?”, meaning “Is it daylight?” or in other words “Can I get up now?” :-).

Jake’s sayings

Amy told Jake that if he had too much sugar his teeth would fall out. At which point he made an imaginary arc from his mouth and went oooh. i.e. pretending that a tooth had fallen from his mouth.

He did the same thing in the Restaurant today after he tasted some ice cream. He is so funny sometimes :-).

We were drawing Christmas trees yesterday and we were taking turns drawing and colouring the Christmas baubles. He is definitely coming on with his general coordination. He was quite accurately drawing little circles and colouring them in.

Beer and Curry

I had a nice time last night. We started at the ‘Hole In The Wall’ opposite Waterloo Station, for a couple of beers then had a couple more and a curry at the Thames Curry House. It was good to catch up with all the news. Mike is now living is Ealing but may venture south of the river. He was looking in the New Cross area but had heard stories of bad things going on. In New Cross? Never!!

In total I had four pints of 4% Becks which was rather nice. Low strength beers seems to be all the rage at the moment. I arrived home quite merry after a brisk walk from Lewisham. Amy and George were having a girls night in and were watching “Mama Mia”. After my initial exclamations regarding Pierce Brosnan’s attempts to sing I joined in whole-heartedly :-). “Mama-mia here I go again…”

No cycling

I am meeting up with my photographer friend Mike this evening. I was umming and ahhing whether to take the bike but in the end common sense prevailed. After all, it may be a messy one. Jake woke at 6.45am and obvously had something on his mind because after doing a big fat poo in his potty declared that he wanted to go ‘downdares’. Once in the lounge he was asking for some music and wanted to choose a CD :-).

We had our breakfast and a cup of tea then Jake watched his ‘Jake’s First 6 Months’ DVD a couple of times. When it was time to go to work Jake was a little upset because he didn’t want me to go :-(. He wanted me to stay and make pizzas. In the end all was okay because after a kiss he happily waved me goodbye as I set off down the slope that is Vicars Hill.

On the train I managed to get half an hours worth of coding done. This combined with an hour last night makes me a very conciencous boy.

Christmas cheer

I have just come back from our Christmas lunch at the local Chinese restaurant. This year, what with the credit crunch we had to pay for our own lunch. Boo! It was very nice and was washed down with a couple of pints of Chinese beer. The name fails me but it was something like ‘Simleg’. Before I start work I though a little blog would be good.

It was not too cold this morning. I put on my leg warmers and buff and was toasty and warm. I am so impressed with my new jacket. It is the business.

At the weekend we went to Fin’s party. I had rather too much mulled wine and when we got back, after putting Jake to bed, I took to my bed and rested for a little while. Jake got rather over-excited at the party after eating two large cakes and ended up doing a little vomit on my trouser leg. Ho hum.

The ‘new one’ is growing at a pace. It is beginning to seem real at last. The 12 week scan is soon and I am excited about the prospect of seeing the little one for the first time.

I have been playing Boomblox on the Wii. It was Amy’s birthday present from Balam. It is kind of like Jenga and is VERY addictive but also very frustrating.

J-J-Jake

Jake has started to stutter. In fact, sometimes he does it for so long that he forgets what he was going to say! At first this was very amusing. However, now that he knows that it gets a laugh he does it for effect!

Amy has read up on this and the advice is to ignore it and it should go away.

Jake had a nice bath yesterday. He sat there clutching Amy’s gold bath bar which he had chosen for her birthday present. Recently it has been difficult to get him out of the bath. He loves splashing around, filling his bath frog with water and watching the bubbles come out.

Jake had two stories last night. ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’ and ‘Dr Dog'(the latter I think may be a little too mature in content for Jake!). Jake was concerned at the end of ‘Bear Hunt’ that the bear was sad. I assured him that the bear was just a little tired and that he was going to sleep until Spring. We then had a conversation in which Jake wanted to know what the seasons were and when the family birthdays were in relation to the seasons. Poppet :-).

Asus Eeepc 901

Amy has been enjoying her Asus Eeepc although yesterday I spied her on the old laptop. Beast! She thinks the Eeepc is a little sluggish. I guess I’ll have to upgrade the memory to 2Gb and enable the page file. That should speed it up.

When I setup the PC I moved her logon profile and Firefox cache onto the SD card so that disk writes to the SSD are kept to a minimum, so maybe this is slowing things down a little. It is only a class 4 device.

I love the machine and if Amy doesn’t start to use it soon I will nab it!(only joking). It’s great for casual use and the battery seems to go on forever. I have installed Firefox, Azureus, Peer Guardian2, Skype and Open Office as the core applications. The SSD has around 6GB and the SD card around 14Gb so there should be enough space for a while. when 32Gb class 6 Sd cards come down in price I’ll swap the old one then that one can go into Amy’s Nikon S1.
